First Holy Communion is a tradition of the Catholic Church when a child is first given the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.  In the United Kingdom and Ireland this rite of passage is usually celebrated when the child is seven or eight years old. The event is usually followed by a large family gathering.

The communion dress is an important part of the day and white is traditionally worn to symbolise purity. A veil is often worn to cover the head but sometimes this is replaced by another form of headdress such as a tiara or floral crown or hairclip with veil attached. Girls may also carry a communion bag in which to carry their prayer book and rosary beads and gloves are also commonly worn.

The child is given religious gifts and money by friends and relatives.
